From Corporate Burnout to Cinematic Passion
For over a decade, I, Richard Audley Vaughan, have poured my heart and soul into creating documentaries that illuminate the rich, often untold, political and social histories of the Caribbean. My journey began in 2010, fueled by a deep commitment to historical reclamation and a desire to amplify the voices of the Jamaican and broader Caribbean diaspora. Until recently, my 9-to-5 in the tech world provided the financial backbone for these cinematic endeavors.
However, September 2025 marked a pivotal moment. Laid off from my role, and frankly, burnt out by a tech culture that prioritizes stock prices over people, I've decided it's time for a bold leap. This is not just a career change; it's a full embrace of my true calling: filmmaking. I am dedicating myself entirely to bringing new documentaries and short films to life, ensuring that vital historical lessons remain accessible to future generations.
Spirit of '38 Productions: Our Legacy and Mission
My production house, Spirit of '38 Productions, is named in honor of two transformative milestones in Caribbean history: 1838, the year of full emancipation from slavery, and 1938, the year of the Jamaican labor rebellions that ignited the modern movement for self-determination. Through meticulously researched visual narratives, my films challenge conventional perspectives and have garnered international acclaim, including awards from the Madrid International Filmmaker Festival and the Amsterdam Film Festival.
My filmography includes:
•The Price of Love: Cheddi Jagan (2024): An unflinching look at the decades-long struggle of the Guyanese leader.
•Four Years of Love: The Grenada Revolution (2021): A powerful testament to the attempt to build a new social order in Grenada.
•Rolling Along: An Inline Movement (2017): A dialectical analysis of an urban subculture.
•The Word is Love: Jamaica's Michael Manley (2012): A critical examination of Jamaica’s fourth Prime Minister.
